Set yourselves free from anxiety

A terrified young woman sits restlessly on her chair as she faces her doctor. She has the look of a frightened bird about to take flight. Her body was tensed, her head keeps turning around as she glances nervously around the room.


Her doctor asked what she was so afraid of, and the woman shrugged and told him “I really don't know.” She was obsessed with the thoughts of dying among other things. “I seem to have this “spells” ', she said. I was washing the dishes one day, and out of the blue, I feel so frightened, I can't move, I was shaking and then I can't catch my breath and next thing I knew I wanted to faint.”


She pauses for a moment “You think I'm crazy don't you?”. The doctor shook his head “No...but I do think your are sick...you show signs of stress and anxiety and...you are suffering an anxiety over death.”


It has been said that anxiety is being afraid of an unknown danger whereas fear is being afraid of a definite and specific harm. For the nervous woman inside the doctor's office, thinking her death is near and was real enough causes her so much fear. Her therapy with the doctor in weekly intervals have helped her understood a lot of things. The root of her anxiety? She was having a hard time accepting her aging process. She becomes aware of her own mortality.


LEARNING TO LIVE WITH ANXIETY


Sometimes we are anxious over things that don't exist. We imprison ourselves unconsciously when we ought to be free and try to enjoy life a lot more. Of course, there are real dangers of which we are afraid. These are genuine threats to our security and stability like emotional and physical problems. ACCEPT AND LET GO


We deny and we don't learn to accept our imperfections. We hated ourselves...how we looked and how others perceived us. A lot of people doesn't even like the sound of their voice while others can be downright embarrassed if they are fat and too skinny. We let this illusion of beauty, wealth and success on which we get from magazines, TV and even the Internet be the source of our misery as we constantly compare ourselves to others. It is only through acceptance and letting go if things which is external is one way of lessening our anxiety panic attacks.


Another clue to overcoming our anxieties is to know that we are not alone in our fears and worries. Anxiety is often an introspective activity and it thrives on isolation. But we don't have to be alone. We are not strange and inferior. The moment you learn to accept who and what you are is also the time that you will discover that you are not set apart from everybody else.


Anxiety is a normal thing and that everyone goes through with life with it. However, it also doesn't mean our anxieties will go away and never come back.


But the bottom line is, we need to control it and not let it dominate our own lives. There would be trouble, there would be pain, there would be sorrow but we can survive. Learn to let go and try to be free.

Untested weight loss drugs may cause severe depression

The reported increase of risk depression and suicidal thoughts associated with these drugs have made their chances of approval close to nil. Researchers from the University of Copenhagen believe that patients using untested and unapproved drugs would only see “modest” weight loss with many still remaining significantly overweight and obese. The researchers also found recorded several side effects—ranging from dry mouth to headaches to depression in patients who used these slimming pills.


To escape the possible dangers of using unapproved and untested anti-obesity drugs, some medical experts offer the option of undergoing bariatric surgery. Some of the surgical procedures used to promote weight loss include biliopancreatic diversion, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, adjustable gastric banding, vertical banded gastroplasty. You may think after all of the talk lately about carb reduction that you need to avoid eating carbohydrates. But the exact opposite is the case. The kinds of carbohydrates you get from fruits and vegetables are a necessary basis of your daily diet. Instead of helping you “pack on the pounds,” they actually help you to burn fat. They are also a major source of fuel for your body, especially your muscles, brain and nervous system.


Carbs occur in two types: simple and complex. They are broken down into glucose, or blood sugar, which is metabolized by your body for energy. Glucose not immediately used by you is stored in your muscles as glycogen, but if your body has an excess of glycogen, it is converted into fat. However, because carbs prime your metabolism, you need them in order to burn fat. This is one of the major reasons you must not starve yourself and eat too few carbs. You must eat a good intake of complex carbs, such as those found in fruits and veggies.


Simple carbs, such as those found in candies and sweets, and also fruit, are turned into glucose quickly. These are the kind which can add to your weight problem. Weight training tips to minimize fatigue

Weight training has become a fad nowadays. Individuals who engage in this activity often make the mistake of lifting too much weight too soon. Weight lifters should bear in mind that weight training should be done in moderation to truly achieve its health benefits. Excessive weight training may lead to fatigue and cause injuries. People who want to lift weight should not increase the weight until they can easily complete the eighth repetition of an exercise routine. Weight should gradually be increased to challenge the muscles until it feels hard to complete repetitions. Individuals who cannot lift eight times in a row should use lighter weights because lifting too heavy too soon may stress the muscles and cause injury. In addition to this, the same set of muscles should not be worked out on consecutive days because the body needs time to rebuild itself. For a complete workout routine, cardiovascular exercises like running, brisk walking, or swimming should be done after weight training or on days where one does not have to lift weights.

Stretch your muscles. After you have completed all the exercises in the sequence, gently stretch all of the muscles you have just worked on.


Do slow repetitions. Perform each exercise slowly 8–10 times. A slow repetition means taking about 3 seconds to lift the weight, 1 second to rest, then 3 seconds to lower the weight. Repeat for the opposite leg or arm, when necessary.


Don’t hold your breath. Breathe regularly during weight training. For example, take a deep breath in, then breathe out slowly as you lift the weight; breathe in as you lower the weight. Do not hold your breath while lifting or lowering the weight.


Pain should not be felt. You should need to exert strong effort when lifting the weights in these exercises, but remember to stay within a range of movement that does not cause you pain. Pain during exercise may be an indication that there is something wrong with one's exercise routine.


Rest. Do resistance or weight training exercises three times a week. A non-weight training day between weight training days should be done to give the muscles ample time to rest and recover.


Injury during weight training is inevitable. Some of the precautions that can be done when one encounters an injury is taking a rest from weight lifting and undergoing physical therapy. Staffing needs in the operating room

Anticipation of appropriate staffing levels in the operating room is key to the safe, effective and efficient utilization of the operating room. Hospital policy and legal standards set by the governing committees provide the minimum guidelines for staffing.


For our model, we will use a six room operating room in a community hospital with a moderately busy, Trauma Level II emergency room. In most jurisdictions in the United States, a Registered nurse must be present during surgery. So if all six rooms are booked with surgeries, a minimum of six RN’s should be scheduled. Allowing for breaks for rest and lunch, another RN should be scheduled, this one called a Floater in some institutions, a Facilitator in others.


Paraprofessional staff includes Operating room technicians, also utilizing Licensed Practical Nurses in this role, which is known as the scrub person. At least one scrub person per room plus an extra should be scheduled.


Additional staff may be needed if complicated surgeries requiring more than one scrub person are booked. For instance, if a camera is being used, a scrub person may be used to hold the camera. Specially trained nurses run equipment such as lasers, while the nurse assigned to the room takes care of the regular tasks.


In some institutions, the ‘floaters’ are also responsible for organizing the instrumentation and supplies that will be used during each case. This important task can save valuable time between cases. Everything that is needed in the room is prepared and gathered together.


Environmental workers such as maintence and housekeeping are essential to the smooth turn over of cases. Ideally, two cleaning persons should be available to clean as soon as a case is finished. If the clean up is delayed, the turn over of cases and ultimately the transition of cases is slowed down which can increase costs due to overtime.


A well run Operating Room has, at its core, an adequate staff.

Sex can be addictive

In the movie Blades Of Glory, the character Chazz Michael Michaels, played by actor Will Ferrel, was a self-confessed sex addict. For those who do not believe in the possibility of people being addicted to sex, Will Ferrel's character would surely be just fictional. However, one episode of The Tyra Banks Show also discussed sexual addiction and even had guests who openly admitted to being sex-addicts. What was more surprising is the fact that one of their guests is only 14 years old and she confessed to being a sex addict since she was 12. Though hard to believe, it is actually true that some people get addicted to sex. How or why this happens will be discussed later on in this article. A person, especially those who engage in frequent sex, might wonder how he or she can determine if his or her behavior is already considered an addiction or not. Characteristics that differentiate sex addicts from those who are just sexually active are also included in this article. Sexual addiction is considered a mental health problem and is very similar to other forms of addiction such as those with alcoholics and drug addicts. Like most health problems too, sexual addiction can be managed or treatment using a method very similar to that used among alcoholics.


Addiction is usually said to be associated, if not a result of, stress and anxiety disorders. A tragic or traumatic event may cause a person to feel self-hatred, extreme anger, loneliness, and depression. In search for an event or situation to change these negative feelings, they seek for things that would can give them pleasure. Substances such as alcohol, amphetamines, and cocaine have a component within them that causes a person to release more dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter responsible for the good or pleasurable feelings that most people experience. Engaging in some activities such as sex and having an orgasm trigger the same reaction within the brain. Because of the satisfaction, relief or escape that these substances and activities provide to a person who is already psychologically troubled, he or she will seek to experience the euphoria some more. As a result, an addiction develops as well as feelings of obsession and compulsion.


Engaging in sexual or romantic activities is considered natural among humans. The moderation or frequency among each individual, however, varies. Some people do these activities more frequently compared to others but that does not necessarily make them sex addicts.


Some of the characteristics that should be observed in a person to consider him or her as a possible sexual addict are listed below:


l He or she must have a pattern of failing in resisting his or her impulse to engage in specific sexual behaviors;


l He or she must frequently engage in those sexual behaviors to a greater extent or longer period than what he or she is intended;


l He or she might experience a persistent desire or unsuccessful efforts to stop, reduce, or control those sexual behaviors;


l He or she spends an inappropriately large amount of time or resources spent in obtaining sex, being sexual, or recovering from sexual experience;


l He or she has a certain preoccupation with certain sexual behaviors or preparatory activities;


l He or she still frequently engages in sexual behaviors even when expected to fulfill occupational, academic, domestic, or social obligations;


l He or she still continues to do the sexual behaviors or activities despite knowing that he or she will have a persistent or recurring social, financial, psychological, or physical problem that is caused or made worse by the behavior; and


l He or she feels distressed, anxious, restless, or irritated if he or she is unable to engage in sexual behaviors or activities.


There are also different levels of sexual addiction. Level one is being engaged in compulsive sexual activities or thoughts only. Level two already includes acts of voyeurism, exhibitionism, and rubbing against people in public places. Level three is when a person already commits much more serious and intrusive sexual offenses that have more harmful consequences.


Sexual addiction, like most other addictions, have several negative consequences. Someone who engages in sexual activities frequently with other people has a greater tendency to acquire infections such as AIDS for example. A female sex addict also has a higher chance of getting pregnant. Sex addicts usually have financial problems because of their uncontrolled expenditure to satisfy their addiction. They will also have social problems such as difficulty relating to their family and their friends primarily because they already have a sense of shame being aware of their problem and the inability to control it.


Professional help is very much needed in order for a person to recover from this kind of addiction. Therapy sessions with professionals may either be done individually or in a group. Several organizations such as Sex Addicts Anonymous and Sexaholics Anonymous already provide programs and support groups to help a person who has an addiction to change and get better in avoiding the compulsion. Some medications can also be used to treat not necessarily a person's sexual addiction but his or her co-occurring psychological problems.

The hazards of over-training

Physical training is something that is integral to success in a vast majority of sports. Being at the ideal physical condition for a particular sport, or at least as close to it as possible, is something that athletes in a competitive environment want to be in. They can go to extreme levels, enduring the most insane training exercises and diet regimen just to hit that peak. However, there are times when the training goes beyond what can be considered healthy, even causing some damage to the internal workings of the body. Muscle spasms, lower back pain, fatigue, and knee pain are just a few of the many possible injuries one can get when the body is forced to work beyond its normal capacity.


The muscles are generally the first parts of the body that are damaged when people take their training way too seriously, with muscle spasms and excessive muscle tension being the initial symptoms. The use of muscle relaxants may sometimes be prescribed to combat these problems, though others may prefer to take an over-the-counter pain killer to just dull the pain. However, ignoring or misdiagnosing these muscle pains can result in aggravated problems. Muscle tissue can be torn and tendons as well as ligaments can be injured. No matter how toned and how strong you make your muscles by training them, there are limits to how much they can endure. The more strenuous a particular exercise or physical activity is --- the greater the risk for injuries. When your quads get strained or you can't flex your arms without screaming in pain, simple muscle spasms are going to be the least of your problems.


Fatigue is also a major concern. The state of fatigue can make additional training difficult and, much worse, it can even take a toll on one's personal life. The natural response to the onset of fatigue is to find a comfortable place to just sit back and rest. However, there are times when taking a rest isn't an option. A person might have an important appointment to attend to that would force him to stay awake for an extended period, aggravating the already weary state of his body. The consequences of this can also extend to the person's mental state, with slower reactions times and incoherent thought processes being not that uncommon.


For other sports, more overt injuries like knee pain and torn muscles are real risks that make physical training a carefully navigated exercise. Any activity that involves lifting weights that exert a large amount of pressure on the muscles can result in injury. Too much weightlifting, for example, has sometimes been known to cause lower back pain. As the weight is lifted upwards by the arms, gravity is pulling the weight down and most of the pressure concentrates on the lifter's lower back, with injury being a definite possibility if the weight is suspended for too long.


The easiest way to avoid the above problems is to have a training program designed specifically for your build, with the stress and weights calculated so that they challenge the muscles, but not overexert them. Feeling a little pain when in training is understandable at the start, but if the pain is chronic, it is best that you seek the advice of a medical professional. Don't wait until you develop a tolerance for pain killers and muscle relaxants to have your body examined for possible injuries or problems.
